THE LEGEND OF HOAN KIEM LAKE

The legend of Hoan Kiem lake started in the 15th century. Vietnam was under the dominion of Chinese dynasties. King Lê Lợi, a courageous and visionary young ruler, rose to unify his country and free his people from foreign control.

As legend has it, one day, while fishing, King Lê Lợi found a magical sword inside a fish. Engraved on this sword were the words “Thuan Thien,” which means “Will of Heaven.” It was a sign that the gods had chosen Lê Lợi to fulfill a great mission. With this sword and the power it granted, Lê Lợi managed to repel the Chinese invaders and establish the Lê dynasty. However, after this triumph, the king was by the lake one day when suddenly, a massive turtle emerged from the depths and approached him. The wise creature asked the king to return the magical sword. King Lê Lợi understood that the sword was loaned to him to accomplish his mission, and it was now time to give it back to the gods. He handed the sword to the turtle, which immediately vanished into the dark waters of the lake, taking the sacred weapon with it. In honor of this event, the lake was renamed Hoan Kiem, meaning “Lake of the Restored Sword.”

The Turtle Tower, Thap Rua, built around 1885, stands in tribute on one of the lake’s two islets.

Today, Hoan Kiem Lake is a popular gathering spot for both locals and tourists alike. People flock to the lakeside to admire its natural beauty and partake in attractions and activities offered nearby during weekends. Hoan Kiem Lake remains an iconic landmark of Hanoi, where the history and mystery of Vietnamese culture intertwine.
